June 18, 2010

Rescue Alarm 8-1. At 23:17 hrs, Paramedic 89 and Station 8 were dispatch for a MVC at 552 Johnsville Rd. Immediately after dispatch, Rescue Squad 8 was added to the call for the additional report of a subject trapped. Initial dispatch information was not clear concerning the circumstances of the incident, however, while units responded, it was determined to be an off-road MVC near 552 Johnsville Rd. Units finally determined the correct location and Chief 8-1(Cartwright) arrived on scene advising a 4X4 vehicle had flipped end-over-end and landed on its roof, deep in the woods adjacent to the dispatched address. Chief 8-1 also established "Johnsville Road Command".

While BLS care was given to a pediatric victim, the paramedic and crew from Station 8 loaded rescue and medical equipment into four wheel drive pick-up trucks and proceeded back into the woods via narrow trails to a site within 100 yards of the incident. Additional four wheel drive vehicles and another medical unit were dispatched to assist.

As crews arrived at the crash site, they found a 4X4 vehicle, upside down, in a wash area at the bottom of a ravene. It was quickly determined that the victim was out of the vehicle, however, the victim was classified as a Priority 1, Category 'B' patient with a decreased level of conciousness. As crews immobilized the victim, Maryland State Police Aviation was requested. After the victim was packaged into a stokes basket, crews and bystanders began to portage the victim to a waiting pick-up truck and was then transported to PM-89. An LZ in a field near the incident, was established for MSP Aviation (Trooper 3).

It was also determined at this point, that a total of 5 people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Three other victims refused treatment. The second medical unit(PM-58) transported the pediatric victim to Carroll Hospital Center(Priority 3) and the second victim was transported via MSP Aviation(Trooper 3) to Shock Trauma(Priority 2).

Crews returned to service at 00:34 hrs.

Units: Chief 8-1, PM-89, RS-8, E-81, U-8

Mutual Aid: PM-58, B-105
