MVC Involving Sheriff's Unit

By Lieutenant 8-2 Christopher Harris
March 12, 2013

Box 8-6. At 2336 hrs on March 11, Station 8 and Frederick County Station 9 units were dispatched for a MVC-Vehicle into a pole, Sheriff's Department on the scene, at 6426 Middleburg Road. Station 8 responded with Paramedic 89, Rescue Squad 8 and Engine 81 shortly after dispatch.

While enroute, "Carroll" dispatch advised Rescue Squad 8 that Potomac Edison had been called with an ETA of about an hour. Paramedic 89 (Baker) arrived soon after with a brief initial report of a Sheriffs unit into a pole, with the pole sheared off at the bottom. They also requested if aviation was in-service due to the weather conditions (rain).

The single occupant of the vehicle, a Sheriff's Deputy, was not in the vehicle, however units closed the road to determine the safety of the scene due to the sheared electric pole. The Deputy was out of the vehicle prior to Fire/Rescue/EMS being on location and had no apparent injuries, however, due to the severity of the impact, Paramedic 89 consulted with Shock Trauma to verify transport to Carroll Hospital Center.

Paramedic 89 transported Priority 3 to CHC, while all other units cleared the incident at 2359 hrs, since the pole was stable with no fire danger. Also, Sheriff's Department supervisors remained on the scene to investigate the incident and awaited the arrival of Potomac Edison.

Units: PM89, RS8, E81, Chief 8-1, Lt. 8-1

Mutual Aid: Frederick County E/T94, SU9
