Entrapment In Frederick County

By Lieutenant 8-2 Christopher Harris
January 3, 2013

Frederick County Box 17-38. At 1635 hrs, Paramedic 89, Rescue Squad 8 and Engine 81 were dispatched for a motor vehicle collision (MVC), roll-over with entrapment in the 11,000 block of Clemsonville Rd. As units responded, they were advised that one was trapped with head injuries by Frederick County Dispatch.

On arrival of Paramedic 89 and Rescue Squad 8 at 1641 hrs, Rescue Squad 8 (Lt. C. Harris) confirmed a single vehicle (pick-up truck) on its side with one victim still in the vehicle and "Clemsonville Road Command" was established. Paramedic 89's crew (Kipe/Barnes) began to assess the patient as the Rescue Squad crew began stabilization procedures.

Maryland State Police (MSP) Medivac 'Trooper 3' had also responded on the initial dispatch and gave an ETA to "Command" of 3 minutes. Other units responding included Frederick Rescue/Engine 171 and Frederick Ambulance 179 from Libertytown. Engine 102 from New Windsor was dispatched by Frederick County since Engine 81 was response checked by Frederick Dispatch. "Command" continued Engine 102's response to set-up a LZ (Landing Zone) if needed. "Command" also provided Trooper 3 with an LZ on the road near the scene but told their crew to survey the LZ and determine if it would be sufficient.

As additional units and personnel arrived on-scene, Engine 81 placed a hoseline in-service and then assisted the Rescue Squad crew. Trooper 3 determined the LZ near the accident scene was adequate and landed. The LZ was handled by Utility 10-1 (Sgt. Moser).

Crews confirmed good stabilization and began to make access to the passenger compartment. At 1658 hrs, the patient had been extricated from the vehicle and moved to Paramedic 89 for further assessment and packaging for transport. Trooper 3 transported the 'Priority 2' patient to Shock Trauma in Baltimore about 10 minutes later.

The cause of the MVC is under investigation by the Frederick County Sheriff's Department. All units were clear of the scene by 1735 hrs.

PICTURES WILL BE ADDED TO THIS STORY SOON.
