| At about 00:45 hrs, Medic 89, Rescue Squad 8, Engine 81 and Medic 109 were dispatched for a serious MVC involving an ATV (4 wheeler) on McKinstry's Mill Road near Green Valley Road (Rt. 75). While units were enroute, multiple calls were recieved. MSP Aviation and Paramedic 59 were dispatched before the first units arrived.
Chief 8 (C. Green) responded and arrived on the scene first, to find 2 victims lying in the roadway, unconcious along with a large amount of people gathered around the scene. He advised that the incident was on McKinstry's Mill Road south of the church at the bridge. Chief Green noted that both victims were breathing and established "McKinstry's Mill Road Command". Medic 89 arrived immediately after and began rapid trauma assessments. It was determined that both victims, one male and one female, had received serious head injuries. Neither of the victims were wearing a helmet.
Rescue Squad 8 arrived and the crew began assisting Medic 89 with patient care as well as setting up lights. Chief 8 requested the Carroll County Sheriff's Department to expedite their response due to a crowd that was not following directions to move away from the scene. As Engine 81 arrived, the crew was assigned to assist with EMS care while a landing zone was established in a field next to the scene.
Both patients (Priority 1) were rapidly packaged and assessed. 'Carroll' advised "Command" to have EMS personnel consult ASAP with a medical facility and shortly thereafter, 'Carroll' advised that both patients would have to be transported by ambulance because aviation had been grounded due to weather conditions (fog).
The female victim was transported by Medic 89 to Carroll Hospital Center and after the arrival of Paramedic 59, the male victim was transported to Shock Trauma. After arriving at Carroll Hospital Center, Medic 89 then continued their transport to Shock Trauma as well.
Rescue Squad 8 and Chief 8 remained on location, in-service, for about 2 hours while the Carroll County Sheriff's Department reconstructed the crash.
As the crew wrapped up operations, "Carroll" dispatch advised Rescue Squad 8 to respond, mutual aid to Frederick County Box 17-45, as first responder for an unconcious person. The crew assisted Frederick County A-179 and Medic 17, who then transported a Priority 3 patient to Carroll Hospital Center.
The Carroll County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy and prayers to both victims' families.
