MISS UNION BRIDGE FIRE PREVENTION

Are you a young woman, 16 to 24 years old, who would like to serve the community by promoting Fire Prevention? This public ambassador of fire prevention is one of the fire company's best educational and promotional tools used to get the community involved in not only fire prevention but also fire safety, for people of all ages.

The Union Bridge Fire Company sponsors a Miss Union Bridge Fire Prevention program each year. The winner of the Miss Union Bridge Fire Prevention contest will represent the Union Bridge Fire Company at local fire department events, fundraisers, parades and many other public education events. How Do I Prepare For The Contest and What Should I Know?

PERSONAL INTERVIEW

Each contestant should have a 3 to 5 minute presentation prepared to share with the Judge's during a personal interview. The contestant may use props or poster boards for their presentation but may not use a powerpoint type presentation, as a computer will not be available. This presentation may be on any fire prevention topic that the contestant believes is important. If you have questions about this presentation, please feel free to contact the Union Bridge Fire Prevention Committee.

PUBLIC SPEAKING INTERVIEW

The public speaking interview will be held on a stage and in view of the public as well as the Judge's. The intent of this interview is to see how the contestant(s) handle speaking to the public, a basic necessity for an ambassador of fire prevention to the community.

Each contestant will be asked the following question: Why is fire prevention important to you?

Then each contestant will randomly draw one of the following questions and be judged on their answer to the question.

  • When you are speaking to a group of babysitters, what do you believe are the most important items of information they should know?

  • When you enter a public place or stay at a hotel, what are the things you should note in the event of a fire?

  • What fire safety procedures should be employed with fireplaces, stoves and portable space heaters?

  • Why are planned escape routes and fire drills so important?

  • When speaking to a group of campers, what precautions must you give them to insure a fire safe environment in order to prevent forest fires?

  • When speaking to a community group about kitchen fires, what precautions would you give them to prevent kitchen fires?

  • We know residential sprinklers save lives and property. How would you promote their use?

  • Where should smoke detectors be placed in the home and how often should they be tested?

  • Explain the proper use of a fire extinguisher and when should or shouldn't you use one?

  • What is the importance of education for people of all ages in fire safety?

  • Describe an electrical octopus hazard and explain how electrical appliances can be safely used in the home.

  • When using outdoor cooking devices (gas or charcoal), when should you use these grills and what precautions should you take with them?
