Passing of Lifetime Member Alton Raymond "Ack" Hesson

It is with sadness and sorrow that the Union Bridge Fire Company announces the passing of Lifetime Member Alton Raymond "Ack" Hesson. "Ack" became an Active Member of the fire company on March 5, 1940. He was a firefighter, driver, past president (1957/1958) and served on several committees during his years of service. He retired on January 1, 1976 and was awarded Lifetime Honorary Membership on February 1, 1981. Just last summer, during the fire company picnic, "Ack" was awarded certificates of appreciation from the State of Maryland and the Town of Union Bridge for his many years of service.

Mr. Alton Raymond "Ack" Hesson, age 94, of New Windsor, died Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Carroll Hospice Dove House. Born September 25, 1921 in Union Bridge, he was the son of the late Bernard Milton and Mary Zumbrun Hesson. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Pauline Cheeks Hesson who died in 2007. Mr. Hesson was a 1939 graduate of Elmer A. Wolfe High School, served three years in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was discharged as a disabled American veteran. He was formerly employed with the Union Bridge Post Office from 1947 until his retirement in September 1987. He was a member of St. Luke's (Winters) Lutheran Church, New Windsor; a member and past president of the Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Co., member of Plymouth Lodge #143 A.F.& A.M. where he served as master in 1962, Glen W. Eyler American Legion Post 282 of Woodsboro, and a life member of D.A.V. Old Glory Post #22 of Westminster. He was a former member of the Union Bridge town council. In his younger years he was active with the Union Bridge town baseball team. He enjoyed model railroading, shooting, hunting and fishing. Surviving are several sisters-in-law including his caregiver, Alice Cheeks. He was predeceased by a sister, two brothers, a niece and two nephews. At his request, a private interment service will be held at a later date in Pipe Creek Cemetery, near Linwood, with his pastor, Rev. Anne Durboraw, officiating. There will be no public visitation. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 447, New Windsor, MD 21776.
