|February 26, 2018|
Box 10-04. At 19:52hrs, Engine 81 and Engine/Tanker 84 were dispatched to assist New Windsor for a Barn Fire in the 3400 block of Uniontown Road. Units from Taneytown and Pleasant Valley were also dispatched to assist. While enroute, units were advised by "Carroll" that several 911 calls had been received.
Chief 8 (C. Green) was first to arrive, finding an 80' x 50' barn, fully involved with bystanders actively working to rescue animals from the structure. Chief 8 requested the Tanker Task Force since the incident was located in a non-hydrant area. Chief 10 arrived and established "Uniontown Road Command", while Engine 101's crew pulled multiple lines to protect the animal rescues as well as protecting the nearby exposures. As additional units arrived on the scene, additional lines were deployed. Crews "opened up" the structure to complete the extinguishment of fire.
Engine 81 arrived and supplied Engine 101, while the crew assisted with the fire attack. Engine/Tanker 84 and the other 'Tankers' were used to move water from a drafting tank located at Uniontown Road and Jasontown Road, as well as fire hydrants from the Bark Hill Water System. The fire was placed "Under Control" at 20:54hrs. The structure and contents were a complete loss, however, no animals were lost in the blaze.
Units remained on the scene for about 2 1/2 hours, completing overhaul of hot spots before returning to service. One firefighter had a minor head injury from falling debris and was transported to Carroll Hospital, where he was treated and released. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.
