The Union Bridge Fire Company is honored to announce that Lou Jordan, a member of our company, has received the “LEON W. HAYES AWARD FOR LIFETIME EXCELLENCE IN EMS”. This award is given to an individual who has devoted a lifetime of dedication to excellence to patient care, compassion and respect for each patient; and commitment to continuous improvement of the Maryland EMS system through his/her professional and personal life.

Louis Carl Jordan began his career in the U.S Army 36th Evacuation Hospital (1960-1963) and then served as a firefighter and EMS Instructor for the Baltimore City Fire Department from 1963 – 1973. He became the Director of Prehospital Care for the Maryland State EMS system in 1972 and held that position until 1986. During his tenure, he developed the “Trauma Go Team” for the Shock Trauma Center and was instrumental in developing medical protocols for field providers. As the past chair of the Committee on EMS of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), he guided the development of the first ASTM EMS National Standard. He was also the project director for the “Maryland Way” (A skills manual used by providers in Maryland for many years).

Mr. Jordan has been an EMT, CRT and Paramedic Instructor since the late 1970’s. He served as a member of the Maryland Instructor Certification Review Board; training and evaluating numerous EMS Instructors. He developed and initially taught the training program for the Maryland State Police and US Park Police medevac helicopter programs. He also served as Maryland’s State Training Coordinator for the National Council for State EMS Training Coordinators from 1972 to 1984. Since 1973, Mr. Jordan has represented state and local interests for the National Registry of EMT’s and is a past member of is “Practical Exams Committee”.

Mr. Jordan founded and has served as president of ‘Emergency Training Associates’ located in Taneytown, MD, since 1979. He has written and reviewed a number of publications and served as editor for various newsletters, including "Firefighter News" and "Rescue EMS News".

Lou has been a member of the Union Bridge Fire Company since 1995. He has served as a Fire Police Officer, various committees and is currently the Public Information Officer. He has also served as "Santa Claus" for our annual "Santa Watch" and other Christmas holiday events for many years.

Mr. Jordan’s skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for EMS is well-known throughout Maryland and even internationally. He is still consulted by various agencies on EMS related issues, including high-level training.

The members and Officers of the Union Bridge Fire Company congratulate Lou for this much deserved award and thank him for his years of dedication to the EMS and fire/rescue services. We are also very proud that he is a member of our company.
