By Captain Christopher Harris
July 12, 2014

Rescue Alarm 10-06. At 11:23 hrs; Station 10 units were dispatched for a MVC, reported "Serious", at the intersection of Bowersox and Nicodemus Roads. As units from Station 10 responded, the incident was upgraded to a report of people trapped. Rescue Squad 8, Engine 101 and two additional medical units were added to the incident.

Duty 10 (M. Moser), arrived to find a collision with two vehicles, both of which were off the road and down an embankment. Lieutenant Moser was able to confirm that two occupants of one of the cars were trapped in their vehicle, at which time he established "Bowersox Road Command".

Paramedic 109 arrived soon after and assessed the three patients. One was assessed to require medivac to a trauma center. The crews from Station 10 stabilized the vehicle to make sure it did not move further down the hill. The passenger side door was removed with rescue tools to make access to the occupants of the car.

On arrival of Rescue Squad 8, a 3:1 hauling system was established to "haul" the victims from the crash site, midway down a steep embankment. Both occupants from the car were removed and placed on backboards. Then, one at a time, the patients were loaded into a "stokes basket" attached to the hauling system and were "hauled" up the steep incline to the road.

Paramedic 109's patient was airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation "Trooper 3" and taken to the University of Maryland 'Shock Trauma Center'. Paramedic 39 (Westminster) transported a patient to Carroll Hospital Center and Paramedic 149 (Winfield) handled a refusal.

Units returned to service about one hour after arrival.

Units On-Scene: Paramedic 109, Engine 102, Engine 101, Duty 10 (New Windsor); Rescue Squad 8 (Union Bridge); Paramedic 39 (Westminster); Paramedic 149 (Winfield); MSP Aviation Trooper 3; Carroll County Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police
