Shop/Shed Fire on Nicodemus Road
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Captain Christopher Harris
March 6, 2014

Structure 10-6. At 18:11 hrs, Rescue Squad 8 was dispatched to assist units from New Windsor and Westminster on a garage fire at 1798 Nicodemus Road. While enroute, Engine 101 received information that a garage was well involved, as well as seeing a large column of smoke from several miles away. Engine 101 (Lt. M. Moser) requested a "Tanker Task Force" to complete the assignment.

Engine/Tanker 82 responded as part of the "Tanker Task Force" at 18:16 hrs, as information was given to Engine 101, that the structure was a 12' x 24' shop/shed, fully involved. Engine 101 continued the response of the "Tanker Task Force" until they arrived to investigate and fight the fire since the location of the incident was in a rural area with a limited water supply.

On arrival, Engine 101 and Engine 102 laid LDH supply line up the lane. Engine 101 discovered a well involved shop/shed structure with an exposure (large trailer shed) on Side "D". Lt. Moser established "Nicodemus Command" as crews from New Windsor quickly knocked the fire as other crews from Stations 3 and 8 walked to the scene for manpower.

Water Supply was provided by pumping tanker water instead of from a "Fold-A-Tank" due to the narrow area provided on the roadway and the quick knock-down of the fire. Crews worked for about 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete the extinguishment and overhaul of the buildings and their contents. The shop/shed and its contents were a complete loss. The incident is under investigation of the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

Nicodemus Road was shut down by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, while a salt truck from the Carroll County Roads Department provided salt treatment to the "water supply" areas due to icy road conditions. One New Windsor firefighter became ill and was transported to Carroll Hospital Center by Paramedic 109. The firefighters condition is not known at the time of this story.

Station 8 units returned to service at 20:23 hrs.
